When you come in for your first visit, you can expect to be warmly greeted and treated with respect and cordiality. Then comes the standard doctor's-office paperwork. (You can also download the forms from this web page, and if you fill them out ahead of time, it would be a help.)
Next, you'll meet with me to discuss the concern that prompted you to come to my office. I'll ask about your health history, and other matters that might affect your health and the treatment you might require. These discussions are private and held in strict confidence by this office and by myself.
The next step is a physical exam, focused on the concern that you are asking me to help you with. Very often, this includes asking you to perform a number of movements that indicate how your muscles and joints are working, and that can give insights into the source of your pain. If you agree, four photos might be taken to record your posture, and to help in creating a rehab plan for you. After the exam is over, I will briefly explain my findings, and may provide therapy to help with your pain.
If you need to have special tests such as x-rays, I will discuss that with you too. (Most people do NOT need them.) We do not take x-rays in our office.
I am very concerned about providing the care you need, and making sure that the care you receive is beneficial to you. To do this, I practice what is called "Evidence-Based Medicine," which involves creating a therapy plan, a schedule of how things are likely to go, and written forms that you'll complete to give me an objective sense of your progress. Your therapy plan is specific to you and your condition, and therefore it is not possible to create it "while you wait," so I will explain your plan, and answer any questions you may have when you return for your second visit.
At the conclusion of this initial appointment, you can choose to experience your first treatment. This may include spinal adjustments, physical therapy, and/or soft tissue massage. Treatment is interactive, so you can express concerns about the different styles of treatment anytime.
Prior to leaving, the doctor will suggest a wellness program to incorporate outside of treatment. If you are in pain when you first come into our office this may include: ice or heat application instructions, certain activities or positions to avoid, and at home exercises and/or stretches. If you desire, our wellness team will work with you also to create healthy habits and routines for your lifestyle. Every person is unique, therefore everyone requires a customized wellness plan. The purpose of our wellness program is for you to achieve good spinal alignment, have a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a positive mental state.
